Turning raw earth into refined gold isn't a single action β it's a sequence of distinct stages, each requiring different tools, expertise, and levels of processing. Here's how gold moves from the ground to a form ready for trade or refining.
Before extraction begins, geologists identify likely deposits through surveys, soil sampling, and increasingly, satellite and remote-sensing data. This stage determines whether a site is worth developing at all.
Once a viable deposit is confirmed, the site is prepared for extraction β clearing land, setting up access roads, and, for larger operations, establishing the infrastructure needed for either open-pit or underground work.
Ore is removed from the ground using methods suited to the deposit type: placer mining for alluvial gold in riverbeds and sediment, or hard-rock mining involving drilling and blasting for gold locked in solid rock.
Extracted ore is crushed and ground into fine particles. This step is essential because gold is often distributed in tiny amounts throughout much larger volumes of rock β breaking it down exposes the gold for the processing stage.
This is where gold is chemically or mechanically separated from the crushed ore. Common methods include cyanidation (using a cyanide solution to dissolve gold) and gravity separation.
